Biography

Colm O’Brien (MD, FRCS, FARVO) is Professor of Ophthalmology and Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at the UCD Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, Dublin. He is past Chairman of the UK and Eire Glaucoma Society, also the Glaucoma Program Committee of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. Currently, he serves on the Scientific Advisory Board of the Glaucoma Foundation, New York, and the Special Trustees Research Committee at Moorefields Eye Hospital London.

He has a long track record of translational research and his current interests include the role of inflammatory cytokines and oxidative stress in trabecular meshwork and optic nerve extracellular matrix accumulation and fibrosis in glaucoma. He has also published on quality of life issues in glaucoma patients, ocular blood flow abnormalities in glaucoma and trend analysis of visual field progression in glaucoma. He has published over 130 peer-reviewed publications, and supervised 28 higher degrees to completion. (PhD, MD, MSc)
