Description of Service:

The Mater Dermatology Service is a regional centre for Dublin North and a National Centre for photodermatology. There are three Consultants in the Dermatology Department Dr. Sean O’Loughlin, Dr. Frank Powell with a major commitment to the Mater and Dr. Gillian Murphy with a major commitment to Beaumont Hospital.

The Department also provides a network of clinics to the North Eastern Health Board Region with Dr. Frank Powell attending Cavan General Hospital and Dr. Gillian Murphy attending Drogheda and Dundalk Hospitals. A fourth Consultant Dermatologist with sessions at Temple Street Children’s Hospital, the Mater Hospital, the Midland Health Board Region and the Rotunda Maternity Hospital will shortly join the Department.

Currently there are seven outpatients clinics held by the Dematology Service each week. Three of these clinics are for contact dermatitis and there is a clinic for cryosurgery and a once per fortnight clinic for cancer screening. A weekly minor surgery clinic is also held. There is a Day Care Centre for patients who receive phototherapy dermatological treatments provided and supervised by Sister Dorothy O’Sullivan. The Dermatology Service works closely with the Departments of Pathology, Plastic Surgery, Radiotherapy, Genito Urinary Surgery, and Audio-Visual Photography. The Department provides undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and is involved in clinical research.
