Description
of Service:
The
Mater Endocrine Unit comprises three Consultant Physicians (Professor
David Powell, Dr. Richard Firth and Dr. Brendan Kinsley) with associated
nursing and paramedical staff and encompassing the Diabetic Day
Centre at 48 Eccles Street. The Diabetic Day Centre provides a walk
in facility for diabetes education, dietetics, chiropody and general
support for patients and their families and the Mater Endocrine
(hormone) Laboratory. A comprehensive specialist service is provided
to all patients with endocrine disorders. In particular, diabetes
Mellitus, Thyroid disorders, Reproductive Disorders, Disorders of
bone and Mineral Metabolism as well as other endocrine disorders
involving the pituitary, adrenal gland and other hormones are treated.
In addition, the Endocrine Department is a major participant in
covering the hospital’s acute medical oncall service for the North
Dublin community and a specialist referral service is provided to
hospitals all over Ireland for endocrine problems. Outpatient clinics
are held in the Mater Hospital on Monday mornings, Tuesday afternoons
and all day Wednesday. Additional clinics are also held at other
times. The Endocrine Consultants also provide a specialist service
to the three maternity hospitals particularly in diabetes and for
the National Maternity Hospital also with all reproductive endocrine
disorders. Regular ward rounds, academic meetings and clinical research
are carried out at the hospital.
