Description of Service:
Haematology is both clinical and laboratory based. The latter is outlined in the Pathology section of the website.
The clinical service is for inpatients and outpatients. St. Vincent 's Ward is the centre for inpatients with beds usually occupied by patients having malignant diseases, e.g. Leukaemia and Myeloma.
Peripheral blood stem cell transplants are carried out regularly. A Day Care Centre also in St. Vincent 's Ward manages patients requiring close follow up, transfusion and chemotherapy. There are 2 outpatient clinics per week and a service is provided not only for Dublin but other parts of Ireland particularly the area of the North Eastern Health Board.
Clincal trials:
Dr Peter O'Gorman is one of the clinical investigators in the PAD Ireland trial an innovative trial for the treatment of relapsed multiple myeloma.
Dr Patrick Thornton is the principal investigator for the European Zeal study an trial using Zevalin as first line treatment for high grade lymphoma in the over 60's
On going research:
Dr Patrick Thornton, in conjunction with University College Dublin, is currently supervising research in to prognostic indicators in Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia (CLL).He is also constructing a database of CLL patients which is hoped will be country wide in the near future.
Dr Peter O'Gorman is progressing a national database of sufferers of the congenital condition Gaucher's disease.
