Neurology Department

Description of Service:

As Dr. Lynch is the first full-time Neurologist to be appointed to the Mater, he is setting up the Neurology Department. Presently the service consists of one Consultant Neurologist, one Specialist Registrar, one rotating general Medical SHO and two Interns shared with Dermatology and Nephrology. There are ten beds assigned to the Neurology Department. The service consists of inpatient care of up to twenty patients with neurological disorders. Conditions managed include stroke, epilepsy, headache, Parkinson’s disease, meningitis, encephalitis, spinal cord disease, neurodegenerative and dementing disorders, encephalopathy, neuropathic and muscular disorders, movement disorders, dizzy spells and collapse, neuropathic pain. A multi-disciplinary team meeting occurs weekly among the medical, nursing, paramedical staff and social services in the hospital.

In addition the neurology team provides a consultative service to the intensive care units, all hospital wards and the Casualty Department. Outpatient services include one general neurology clinic weekly, a monthly specialised movement disorder clinic, a specialised paediatric movement disorder clinic once monthly at Temple Street Hospital and a specialised surgical movement disorder clinic monthly at Beaumont Hospital.

The Neurology Department is an academic department for University College of Dublin Medical Students including third year, fourth year and final med students. Research interests of the Neurology Department include the clinical, radiological and genetic aspects of movement disorders and other neurodegenerative conditions in particular the department is busy assessing families with neurodegenerative disorders including Parkinson’s disease and frontotemporal dementia. The laboratory aspect to this research is to be developed.
