Description
of Service:
The
Department of Plastic Surgery provides a comprehensive range of
services for dealing with both acute and elective plastic surgical
problems. The variety of work undertaken includes:
- Surgical
management of skin and soft tissue tumours.
- All aspects
of Hand surgery (including Congenital, Traumatic, Rheumatoid,
Dupuytrens).
- Breast reconstruction/reduction.
- Management
of congenital cleft and craniofacial deformities.
- All aspects
of head and neck reconstruction some combined cases with the ENT
service.
- Trunk, chest
and pelvic reconstruction.
Acute
referrals consist predominantly of hand and soft tissue injuries,
and at present, due to restricted theatre space and bed numbers,
the in-patient service is only available to the local catchment
area, with no tertiary referrals being accepted.
In
conjunction with Temple Street Hospital, the unit provides the largest
cleft/craniofacial service in the country.
Access To
Service:
- Access to
outpatient clinics is by referral from General Practitioner (Family
Doctor). The letter of referral should be sent to the Outpatient
Appointments Department, Mater Hospital, Dublin, 7. The letter
is then read by a Senior Member of the Medical Staff who prioritises
the request. Patients are then informed in writing of the appointment
date and time by the Consultants Secretary.
- Inpatients
and outpatients maybe referred from an in-house Consultant. Appointments/consults
are arranged for inpatients through the Medical Team and outpatients
through the Secretary.
- The Accident
and Emergency Department also refer patients.
