Postgraduate Medical Education
Description of Service
The Department of Postgraduate Medical Education provides great opportunities for doctors in training in the Mater Hospital to advance their education and develop their medical careers.
Over the past number of years the department has expanded and created greater links with UCD in the development of new educational modules including Management for Clinicians, Research Methodology and Palliative Care leading to the awarding of academic professional certificates and diplomas where appropriate.
A clinical skills laboratory has recently been added to our teaching facilities. This allows us to run essential courses including an Airways Management Training Programme delivered by the anaesthetic service here in the Mater Hospital.
The postgraduate education programme for general practitioners continues to run successfully and we are pleased to be associated with the North Dublin Faculty of the ICGP in the organisation of this programme. We are also very happy to be involved with the administration of the new North Inner City Specialist Training Programme in General Practice especially with it’s thematic focus on deprivation and inner city practice.
The Dublin Academic Medical Centre (DAMC) project continues to develop with postgraduate training issues a key illustration of the benefits of this novel partnership approach. Specifically a new training programme for interns has been developed in conjunction with the UCD Intern Training Network. The result is an improved training experience for our Intern cohort. Novel elements of the scheme include an e-learning platform containing over 100 hours of teaching materials and an e-logbook which is regularly reviewed by our newly appointed Intern Special Lecturers. We hope this programme will ensure that UCD hospitals continue to attract the best and brightest medical graduates
We should not let the opportunity pass to acknowledge the 150th anniversary of the Mater Misericordiae Hospital’s foundation. A great debt of thanks is due to the Mercy Sisters for their commitment to the people of north Dublin, to the sick of all parts of Ireland and to the ongoing education and training of multiple generations of doctors who have passed through this great institution.
We sincerely hope the next 150 years will see the hospital and it’s staff continue to flourish.
