Introduction
The Mater Misericordiae University Hospital’s Vision Mission and Ethos derive from the life of Jesus Christ, the Divine Healer and Founder of Christianity, the spirit of Venerable Catherine McAuley, the foundress of the Sisters of Mercy.
Mission Effectiveness Programme
The purpose of the Mission Effectiveness Programme is to enhance awareness of the Mater’s Vision, Mission and ethos and to ensure continuity and integration of the value they express into the day-to-day life of the hospital.
The primary task of the Director of Mission Effectiveness and the members of the Mission Effectiveness Committee is to develop a programme which will facilitate and support the staff in achieving this objective.
The aim is to develop a strong sense of identity with and commitment to the core values underpinning the Mission Statement; to create a strong sense of care and support for the staff while promoting a high degree of empowerment and involvement with an emphasis on open communication.
The newly developed facility at No.15 Vincent Street provides the main venue for this process. In this home-like setting, away from the busy pace of the hospital, an atmosphere of hospitality, openness, trust and cooperation is provided.
The Mater’s Mission and Ethos are shared and common aspirations among the various groupings the grades of staff are strengthened.
It is hoped that this facility will convey peace and wholeness and provide an environment where all staff will find renewed hope, courage and enthusiasm, even in the midst of diminishing resources.
No.15 will be available for all Mission-related courses, seminars and workshops. Availability will be conditional on the following:
Each course must be introduced by presenting a slide of the Mater Crest and Motto, the mission statement and a quote from the particular standard with which the course is related.
Mission Statement
By caring for the sick in the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital
We participate in the healing ministry of Jesus Christ;
We honour the spirit of Catherine McAuley and the Sisters of Mercy;
We pledge ourselves to respect the dignity of human life;
To care for the sick with compassion and professionalism;
To promote excellence and equity, quality and accountability.
Values
The Mission Statement sets out the values which we espouse as Mater Hospital Staff. It constitutes the foundation for every service we provide, every programme we develop, and every transaction we negotiate on behalf of the hospital and its patients.
It inspires a particular ethos and response whereby we are committed to creating and promoting a centre of excellence where the patient is the primary focus of all our endeavours. It enunciates certain key standards which underpin and permeate our everyday working relationships and professional activities as we engage in the delivery of services to the patients.
These standards together with their associated key indicatos for evaluation, provide us with an instrument whereby we may measure whether the hospital's vision, mission and ethos are truly alive.
VISION, MISSION AND ETHOS
Catherine McAuley’s dream of establishing a hospital became a reality with the opening of the Mater Misericordiae Hospital on September 24th, 1861. Since then, the Mater Hospital continues in its ministry to all in need of healing, treating patients at local, regional and national level and providing clinical education and training for healthcare personnel.
In caring for the sick, we participate in the healing ministry of Jesus Christ. We honour the ethos and spirit of Catherine McAuley, the Sisters of Mercy, and the purpose for which the hospital was established: to heal, to offer hope, to bring peace of mind, and in so doing, to bear witness to a compassionate God who is present among us.
We pledge ourselves to reverence the dignity of human life at every level of its existence, believing that every person is made in the image of God.
We respect the basic human rights of all persons and treat patients and their families, colleagues and all those who collaborate with us with respect, dignity and professionalism.
We accept the social teachings of the Church by fostering a multi-disciplinary team approach and creating a harmonious work environment where each member of staff is regarded as vital to the service and his/her contribution is valued.
As a teaching hospital, we strive for excellence in our care for the sick through staff development, research and evaluation.
We exercise responsible stewardship by providing an equitable, efficient service, always mindful of the most vulnerable and advocating on their behalf when resources are required to appropriately meet their needs.
