is proud to be affiliated with the association of Pulmonary
Hypertension centres of Britain and Ireland.
The Pulmonary
Hypertension Unit was established in October 2002 at the mater
hospital under the direction of Dr. Sean Gaine, Consultant
Respiratory Physician.
The aim
of the unit is to diagnose and treat patients with pulmonary
hypertension. We aim to identify the educational needs of
patients, careers, medical and nursing staff, and to promote
patient self-care and independence through the provision of
relevant teaching and support.
Our
Emblem
Stephen
Touhy, a graphic designer, who is also a patient living with
pulmonary hypertension, designed the unit emblem. The symbol
is that of a harp shaped heart. This symbol of Ireland represents
our aims to become an nationwide unit. The blue colouring
indicated the Deoxygenated blood flow to the lungs, the red
indicates the Oxygenated return to the left heart. The four
strings of the harp represent the four chambers of the heart
and also the four provinces.
