Graduate Diploma in Orthopaedics and Musculoskeletal Medicine
Programme Description: As about 20% of Irish GP workload is related to musculoskeletal complaints, a sound knowledge of the basic issues and management of musculoskeletal problems is essential for all medical practitioners. On completion of this course, participants should have the knowledge and skills to be able to diagnose and effectively manage a comprehensive range of important musculoskeletal conditions, perform various relevant procedures and communicate effectively with other health care workers in the musculoskeletal field to facilitate excellent patient care. The course is run sequentially over two semesters and consists of 12 modules. Learning is through a combination of 12 one-day teaching sessions on-campus and off-site learning material. Each on-campus day will include four lectures given by orthopaedic surgeons, rheumatologists, physiotherapists and others related to the field of orthopaedics and musculoskeletal medicine, a 2-hour session in which students will deliver presentations relating to orthopaedics within their practice and hands on skills sessions encompassing orthopaedic clinical examination, procedures and skills relevant to GPs' practice of orthopaedics and musculoskeletal medicine. As a result of satisfactory attendance at this course and successful completion of evaluations, candidates will be eligible for a Graduate Diploma in Orthopaedics and Musculoskeletal Medicine through UCD. 1. Introduction to Musculoskeletal Medicine, Orthopaedics and Osteoporosis Examination Participants will be assessed continuously throughout the course at each of the on-site days by means of MCQ tests covering the previous module of online and on-campus course work and performance in self-directed seminar presentations. At the end of the course there will be a final short dissertation based on seminar projects.
