Patients are referred to the National Cardio-Thoracic Surgery unit by consultant cardiologists and consultant physicians from the Mater Hospital or other hospitals around the country. In some cases the general practioners' may refer patients.
The letter of referral should be sent to the relevant Consultant, Department of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery, Mater Hospital, Dublin 7. The letter is then read by the consultant who prioritises the request. Patients are then informed in writing of the appointment date and time by the medical secretary. Appointments and consultations are arranged for in-patients by the medical team and out-patients through the medical secretary. The accident and emergency department also refer patients.
N.B.The patient is placed on the surgical waiting list the day they are reviewed by the relevant consultant in out-patients.
