Echocardiogram (ECHO)

This provides information on the heart structure and muscle function. A probe is placed on your chest and a high-frequency sound is passed through the skin of the chest. Lubricatiing jelly is rubbed on your chest first to help make good contact with the probe.

The probe then picks up the echoes reflected from various parts of the heart and shows them as an echocardiogram - a picture on a screen.

This test is painless and can take from 10 minutes to 45 minutes to complete.
