Major Trauma Referrals from the Central Trauma Network via 1800-TRAUMA

In collaboration with HSE National Office for Trauma Services (NOTS), the Mater is to extend operation of the 1800-TRAUMA line to 24/7 from MONDAY APRIL 13th, 2026.

Referral Criteria

Resuscitated Secondary Transfers whose dominant injury is:

  • Spinal Trauma (subject to Consultant)
  • Complex Limb Injury; requiring Orthopaedic +/- Vascular +/- Plastics (when rotas allow)
  • A limb threatening injury
  • Trauma with dominant limb injury
  • Trauma with dominant Pelvic Injury (when rotas allow)

Acceptance for transfer is likely to be preferentially for referrals where a clear patient benefit exists due to the unavailability of services or pathways at the referring hospital for a given patient.

  • A consultant in the referring hospital can phone the “Trauma Desk” in the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) via the 1800-TRAUMA phone number (1800-872862).
  • Acceptance will be subject to capacity and resources.
  • Transfer of patient to occur 8am to 8pm, where possible.
