Mater Smithfield Rapid Injury Clinic
If you have a minor injury, the Mater Smithfield Rapid Injury Clinic offers you assessment and treatment. You don’t need an appointment or a GP referral.
What to expect at the clinic
When you arrive at the clinic, you will be registered and then seen by an Advanced Nurse Practitioner who specialises in emergency care or an Emergency Medicine Doctor. You may be referred for x-rays if necessary. The clinic and its staff can access all of the Mater Hospital's services.
The clinic does not have access to non-urgent scanning including MRI/CT/US or non-urgent outpatient appointments.
The Smithfield Local Injury Unit (LIU) is part of the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital. While we endeavour to treat everyone who has a clinical problem at the injury unit, sometimes patients will also need surgery like Orthopaedics or Plastic surgery.
Currently, we do not have direct connections with hospitals closer to your home that would allow you to access this treatment more conveniently.
As a result, if your injury requires surgery, such as an orthopaedic procedure, our Smithfield services can only refer you to the Mater Hospital, where we are experiencing significant delays in accessing orthopaedic surgeries.
While we strive to offer care as promptly as possible, we acknowledge that we may not be able to meet this at present. We continue to advocate, to better serve our patients and reduce waiting times.
We sincerely apologise for this situation and believe it is important to be transparent with you regarding our capacity constraints.
If you live closer to another hospital you may wish to attend there instead.
You are welcome to seek assessment at any local injury unit or emergency department.
