Department of Clinical Anaesthesia
The Department of Clinical Anaesthesia provides anaesthetic and perioperative medical care to approximately 13000 patients every year. This involves the assessment of the patients before surgery, the provision of high quality anaesthesia care during the operation, and optimal care in the post anaesthesia care unit (PACU) and the hospital wards.
There is also a significant requirement for anaesthesia services outside of the theatre environment, Radiology, Gastroenterology, Cardiology and for Electroconvulsant Therapy (ECT).
The Division provides training to 27 Anaesthesia trainees in a broad range of subspecialties including cardiac, thoracic, vascular, major spinal and ENT surgery. The hospital is the National Tertiary referral centre for Cardiothoracic and Spinal surgery.
Modular training is provided in Intensive Care, Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia, Regional Anaesthesia, Vascular and ENT anaesthesia.
A one year fellowship in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia and Peri-operative echocardiography is offered with a view to comprehensive training in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia and attainment of board certification in preoperative echocardiography.
Didactic tutorials appropriate to both parts of the fellowship examination, to the Diploma of Intensive Care Medicine and to post-fellowship trainees with specific interests are offered.
An active academic mentorship programme is in place.
