We provide a multi-disciplinary, high quality and compassionate care to all patients with neurological conditions.

The DNI is a registered charity and a centre of excellence for the care of patients with neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, stroke, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, headache, neuropathy and muscular dystrophy. Our high-quality care is provided by consultants, non-consultant hospital doctors, clinical nurse specialists and other allied professionals, such as physiotherapists.

In 2015, the DNI cared for 2,867 outpatients and had 473 day ward attendance. A survey carried out in 2012 revealed that the overwhelming majority of our patients – over 95% – are satisfied with the DNI’s service.

Education and research

The institute is a unique, innovative facility with academic links to the original Neurological Institute in Montreal and New York. The clinical care we offer is closely connected to our education and research programme. We run monthly educational talks for patients with different neurological problems, given by a clinical nurse specialist and/or the relevant consultant.

We have a number of ongoing research projects, studying:

  • Different aspects of gait, such as the freezing of gait in Parkinson’s disease
  • Patient reaction times
  • Skin sebum (oil) production in Parkinson’s disease
  • Familial Parkinson’s disease
  • Early diagnosis of frontotemperal dementia and drug discovery in neurodegenerative disease
