The pain medicine service runs outpatient clinics where patients visit a member of the pain medicine team. Patients also attend for pain treatment and services run by other specialties, such as physiotherapy and psychology.

Appointments

This is a very busy service and there is generally a waiting time for appointments. We will contact you by letter with the earliest appointment time available. Please contact us to let us know if are attending or if you wish to cancel or reschedule the appointment offered.

Coming in for your outpatient appointment

On the day of your appointment, please arrive no more than ten minutes ahead of time, as the waiting room has limited seating available. You will be seen by the pain medicine team who will talk to you about whether further treatment is required. They will also notify your GP.


Pain intervention procedures

Appointments

If the team recommends that you have a pain intervention procedure, you will be placed on the procedure waiting list. We will contact you by letter with the earliest appointment time available. Please contact us to let us know if are attending or if you wish to cancel or reschedule the appointment offered. 

Here is a checklist of things to bring to your appointment:

  • Private health insurance details and/or medical card details
  • List of your current medication
  • Recent scans (if you have copies)

Coming in for your pain procedure

On the day of your procedure, please arrive no more than ten minutes ahead of time, as the waiting room has limited seating available. After registration, you will be directed to the waiting room where the nurse will collect you for your procedure.

Preparing to go home

After your procedure you will be discharged. Here is a checklist of things to think about before your discharge:

  • If there are any problems when you are discharged, who should you contact? 
  • Do you need an outpatient appointment or follow-up care? 
  • Do you need a medical certificate for work? 
  • Have you got all your belongings?

Following your discharge home, you will receive a call from the nursing team within a month to see how effective the procedure was.

Referral Information

Your GP or another consultant will refer you for a consultation with a member of the pain medicine team. The pain medicine team may then decide to refer you on for a pain procedure.
