Neurology is a branch of medicine that deals with disorders of the brain and nervous system. At the Mater Hospital, we offer an inpatient service, including diagnostic testing for neurological conditions and support for their management.  Our outpatient service includes movement disorder, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis and stroke clinics.

Our inpatient service includes:

  • Dedicated beds for neurology patients
  • Inpatient consultations
  • Consultation service for the Emergency Department

The Dublin Neurological Institute (DNI) was set up 2008 to:

  • Provide more specialised neurology clinics
  • Reduce waiting list times

The DNI is a registered charity and a centre of excellence for neurology. It works alongside the neurology service in the Mater Hospital to provide the highest quality of care for patients with neurological conditions.

5,550 people attended our neurology outpatient clinics in 2015. 3,399 of these attendances were in the DNI.

During clinic visits, patients receive multidisciplinary care from a team that includes consultants, non-consultant hospital doctors, clinical nurse specialists and clinical therapists. We run four to five large outpatient clinics every week, diagnosing and treating neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis (MS), myasthenia gravis, motor neurone disease, epilepsy and neuropathy.

We also run a specialised clinic for patients who have undergone, or who are candidates for, deep brain stimulation surgery. You can find out more about the other specialised clinics that we offer, such as our migraine clinic, on the DNI website.

Our clinical nurse specialists

Our clinical nurse specialists are available to give support and advice to the Mater Hospital’s neurology patients in between their clinic visits. They also run weekly nurse-led clinics. We have clinical nurse specialists in the following areas:

  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Epilepsy
  • Headache
  • Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS)

Referral Information

Patients must be referred by a GP or consultant. The referral should contain as much clinical detail as possible about the patient’s condition and should be in a typed format.  The referral should be sent by post or fax to:

Neurology Department
Mater Hospital
Eccles Street
Dublin 7
D07 R2WY
Fax: (01) 803 4569

Once a referral is received, it is scanned into the hospital’s referral system and triaged by a consultant. An appointment letter is then posted out to the patient.  If applicable, patients will receive a text reminder 10 days before their appointment.

Given the high demand for neurology appointments, the wait to see a neurologist can be up to 15 months.
