Dr. Edmund Carton


Anaesthesia, Critical Care Medicine, Extracorporeal Life Support


Dr Carton graduated from Trinity College Dublin in1980 and after initial training in Internal Medicine (MRCPI 1983) started Anaesthesia training in Dublin (FFARCSI 1985). Dr Carton continued his training in the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, USA (1987 – 1993). From 1993 to 2008, Dr Carton was a consultant in Anaesthesia and Critical Care Medicine in the Mater and Rotunda Hospitals. In 2008, Dr Carton was appointed full-time consultant in Critical Care Medicine and Anaesthesia and in 2009 he was appointed Medical Director of the Extracorporeal Life Support (ECLS) service in the Mater Hospital. ECLS is provided in the Mater ICU for adult patients with advanced cardiac or respiratory failure who continue to deteriorate despite optimal conventional support. In 2016, the Mater ECLS service received a ‘Centre of Excellence’ Award from the Extracorporeal Life Support Organisation (ELSO) in University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, USA.
